What is heritage?

Heritage is defined as “something that is handed down from the past.”

In the context of a community, it embodies everything concerned with the history, activities, and creation of that community. This includes the music, art, costumes, cultural traditions, spaces, and buildings within a community.

Our society advocates for the conservation of heritage stories, places, and buildings.

Molly’s Reach in 2025. Original building circa 1895 was home to a general store, liquor store, and now a popular café and film location.

Stonehurst. Built in 1914.

We believe each time a heritage building is demolished, a tangible link to the community’s heritage is lost.

Demolition of older buildings results in the squandering of irreplaceable resources such as “first growth” wood: hence, the “greenest” building is an existing building.

Marina House. Built 1920-1924.

Heritage buildings and spaces are valued for their association with their original occupants whose stories and activities add to the character of a community.

Fletcher House. Built in 1912.
